Enjoy practicing the ancient Chinese self-healing exercise system of Qi Gong. This gentle practice is about cultivating healing energy and vitality. Focused attention helps center and quiet the mind to reduce mental stress. Slow, circular movements increase circulation throughout the body. Breathing techniques accompany every movement designed to elicit the relaxation response to calm and refresh the nervous system. Practicing Qi Gong bring the body into balance so it's natural healing ability can enhance overall health. This exercise class is especially appropriate for older students because it is done seated or standing with a chair support and the movements are performed within each student's physical capabilities.
Class begins with 3 centering breaths followed by a short seated body warm up focused on ROM in major joints of the body. Next exercises to enhance students awareness of energy circulation both inside and outside of the body are practiced. The 8 Brocades Qi Gong form is introduced slowly with several repetitions on each phrase. Attention is on the slow, circular, flowing quality of the movements rather than executing the phrase exactly. The class ends with a breathing practice and time to sit in stillness.
