Chair Yoga is a fitness class designed for students new to yoga and those who are unable to get to the floor on a yoga mat, like in traditional classes. Emphasis is on moving the body to develop flexibility, strength and stamina. Breathing practices are included and become the foundation of the posture flows. Modifications are offered to encourage students to participate as fully as possible in each posture.
Class begins with 3 centering deep breaths. Next students are led through a general seated body warm up followed by 3 or 4 different yoga postures. Emphasis is on flowing in and out of the postures with full breath and then sustaining the full expression on a posture to develop stamina. Pauses between postures are encouraged as a time to rest the body as well as a time for students to feel/experience the effects of the yoga postures, developing proprioception. Class ends with a breathing practice and time sitting in stillness.
